This movie, is C.R.U.E.L. It takes away every ounce of your energy, every bit of your tears and every single breath that you have. CRUEL, I SAY!!!
I was never THIS exhausted after watching a movie... *cries again*
Well then, let's get down to bussiness.
This movie is pretty much about the injustice that always happens in this cruel world, mostly unknown to the public eye. We think we know these things happen, but we never do anything about it.
In the first scene, you would see Shin Hye, acting as the future self of the little girl in that picture there with a Policeman, but really a jail warden, calling him dad. He was giving her a stack of crime files for her to use.
Yes, she's a lawyer. Yay Shin Hye, an awesome job at last!

The hero here -who was misunderstood for years in front of the public- was Yong Gu, the autistic dad of a cute little toddler, Ye Sung. Although he was autistic, it didn't stop him from trying his best to raise his only daughter just as perfectly as any other parent would. He even had a job as a security member of some parking lot, earning a few hundred dollars to feed Ye Sung and take her to school. They were happy just as they were, if you asked me.
Ye Sung though, was not like any toddler. She was never ashamed to have such a unique dad, having no mother and living such a poor life. She was smart, positive with everything, cheerful and helpful towards her dad. She helps him in the morning before he goes to work, even asking him to not forget to eat well. Smart kid, she is. She enjoyed everyday she had with him, watching the infamous cartoon show, 'Sailormoon' in their small house they live in with each other.
One fine day, Ye Sung and Yong Gu went out for a walk only to find themselves stuck in front of a display window, staring at a 'Sailormoon' school bag at some store by the streets. Ye Sung wanted the bag so badly that Yong Gu promised her he would buy it, once and for all once he gets his pay that month. But before they knew it, the bag was taken by a wealthy family, whose child claimed to have the bag first. Yong Gu, insisted that it should be Ye Sung's but the wealthy father insisted that he deserves a fist instead.
So they went back home, dumbfounded and disappointed by the event that took place earlier. Ye Sung said that it was okay, seeing that her dad was worried and swollen in the face and all.
Days after that, when Yong Gu got his monthly pay, he wanted to go home early as Ye Sung would start school by tomorrow and he wanted to help her get ready. But right then, the wealthy child from earlier came to the window where he worked and told him that she knew another place where he could buy another of those 'Sailormoon' bags. Unsurprisingly, he was glad to hear that so he followed her.
Unfortunately, those few days, the temperature was quite cold so the small water puddles on the roads were quite frozen. So while they were on the way, when the little girl skipped happily along the alleys as she guided Yong Gu to the place where the bag was, she slipped on the little puddles mentioned earlier. Poor kid. Even worse, as she fell, she grab hold of a rope above her that was tied to a stall umbrella which then caused a brick to fall on her head, killing the poor child.
Yong Gu though, the pure soul dad, didn't notice the brick so he thought the child was just unconscious. Due to the situation, he remembered the steps his boss taught him to do if anything happens in the parking lot and he had an unconscious victim. He had to unbutton their jeans, pants and etc., pulling it down slightly to make way for blood circulation. Then he has to unbutton a few of the upper ones on their shirt to pump their chest and finally giving CPR. And a random old woman chose to pass by at THAT freakin moment.
OF COURSE it would be a misunderstanding by the looks of what Yong Gu was doing! Ugh I'm so frustrated.
A few moments or so, he was taken to the police station -obviously- along with the child's body. He was autistic, remember? So what he did was not defend himself but he kept saying over and over again that he had to go home as Ye Sung was waiting for him. But of course, the police was frustrated by his act that looked like he was trying to escape without answering their questions. So they had to keep him for the night. Poor daddy.
At home, Ye Sung was waiting for him patiently...even until it was dark out and the weather getting colder. Sadly, she just slept alone that night. The next morning, she expected him to be at least asleep beside her, but he wasn't, so she just went to school without him sending her off. She took her stuffs in her old bag and not a 'Sailormoon' one. *sobs*
Later on, after school, as Ye Sung was on her way back home, she saw a massive crowd by the road so she chose to join and look at what was it that was so interesting. That's when she saw her dad, Yong Gu. His hand was tied up and he had to do an imitation of what he did to the child last evening. Oh you know, typical police procedure for a murder case. It was raining so the police wanted to settle the case quickly with all the media people and the bystanders surrounding the scene. Yong Gu, who didn't understand a thing, just went with the flow, causing more anger to the dead child's parents who was there, watching him, sobbing. And Ye Sung...oh how my heart broke to see her crying, trying to get to her dad in that heavy rain only to have herself stopped by a policeman. Yong Gu noticed her and started yelling for her but the police grabbed him and shoved him into the van to take him to the station, ignoring his yelling. Did you know what was it that he was shouting?
"Ye Sung go home! Don't catch a cold! Go home, don't stand in the rain!"
*sobs-grabs yet another tissue*
Now this, this is where the laughing part starts. You can put away your tissues for a while, considering there's probably a pile of it by now.
Not long after Yong Gu was taken to the station, he was sent to jail, along with these 5 maniacs. From your left, we have an 'adult' assaulter -he pretty much did porn crime-, a gangster, a... -I can't really remember, sorry-, a... -yeah this one too-, and another porn criminal. They were good inmates if you asked me, as they were fine the minute Yong Gu came.
Thought when he came, the gangster took his file, asked the others to read what was his crime and spank him and bluff-punched him a few times. It was pretty okay after that, considering the fact that they helped him a bit to adjust with the situation there.
On Ye Sung's side, however, was not going so well. She got sent to an orphanage nearby where she had to live like the other kids, which was not fun at all. The caretakers were like ignorant llamas. They just let them off in the orphanage, scolding them when they did something wrong or when they didn't talk and so on, bla bla bla. Poor Ye Sung.
Back to Yong Gu, he was still quite, there in the territory of the prison. When they were released to the field for the day, for them to play around or exercise, the gangster guy was acting it all up, looking like a real brute in front of the other gangster, who was his rival there. He was glared at by his rival but he chose to walk by and act all brute again, ignoring his rival even more. That when his rival came to him with a sharpened pencil -in a bad way kind of sharpened- and tried to stab him in the guts. Yong Gu onthe other hand, was looking at them from afar, so he noticed the rival guy trying to harm his inmate, so he lunged for him, covered his path and got stabbed instead.
He was then taken to the prison emergency room to get treated. When he was better, the inmate gangster of his felt this kind of debt towards him so he asked him if he wanted anything in return. When Yong Gu refused, he insisted, making all the others agree to him that he can give him anything.
Actually, he really could give you anything, considering the fact that he was a gangster who had so many followers that could do things for him from the world outside of that jail. So Yong Gu asked him for what he wanted. And guess what, it was Ye Sung. He wanted Ye Sung. Well no surprise there, Yong Gu. And like he promised, the gangster dude really brought her there, in with his own techniques, though.
Finally, Ye Sung was reunited with her sweet daddy. The gangster ahjussi said that she could only stay for a little while, as in for a few hours or so, but they were too late to get her back home, so she had to spend a few days there, with her daddy and his inmates. The moment she arrived, you should really look at Yong Gu's expression. It was pure daddy's love. *sobs-sniffs*
Even Ye Sung's expression was...heart-breaking. She cried, punched her little fists onto his chest while saying things like,
"you jerk! Where have you been? I was so worried, I missed you!" and stuff. She wasn't just a normal kid, remember? She was THE best daughter ever.
xxx
So all the while she was there, she was fed by her daddy with the little food they get from the guards, she was cared for even by the rest of Yong Gu's inmates and she even taught the gangster ahjussi how to read and write. How cute! She eventually became part of the 'family'.
Several times a week, they almost got caught by the guards, who sometimes heard the little squeaky voices of Ye Sung's when she laughs or squeals a bit. Luckily, Yong Gu's inmates always tries their best to cover it up. It was really sweet of them. That was the kind of friendship that we seek for. They barely even know each other, nothing more than knowing their crimes but still gets along after a few times. *sniffs-trying hard not to cry*
After a while, when Yong Gu was talking to Ye Sung, the guards was not so far away, so he kind of heard her voice so he snucked past them and tried to get them by surprise but Yong Gu's inmates was faster, they lifted her behind the door so he couldn't see her legs by the lower window but they failed. The warden came round and got to the upper window where he could see Ye Sung pretty perfectly. Boy were they in trouble.
Not long after a few misunderstandings about Ye Sung, the warden let go of this case easily, seeing that even Yong Gu wasn't that harmful of being a nuisance. So Ye Sung got to stay with his father till his trial.
Along the way to his trials, Yong Gu's inmates helps him on how to defend himself when he gets into the court. They asked him how did the incident that made him like that happened and tried to figure out how did the child die as it wasn't Yong Gu's fault at all. They tried REALLY hard to help him, those sweet lunatics. They even prepared him a script on what to say to get the juries to call innocent on him.
xx
And so the days passed. And the day of the trial finally came. Yong Gu was ready in his waiting room, reciting the script his inmates made him memorize again and again.
And surprise, surprise! The father of the dead child came. Oh, heck!!! He was the head of police! No wonder he could come in.
He came in, stood in front of Yong Gu and mercilessly slapped him hard. H said awful things to that poor Yong Gu.
"You need to die in order to leave your daughter to live in peace. Because if you're called innocent, I will make Ye Sung suffer!"
*throws pillow at the screen, cussing and hating this guy with my guts and all* YOU BIG MEANIE.
This was the injustice I talked about earlier. POOR YONG GU!!! T^T
So then, as he was called to the stand, the judge asked him if it was in his intention or not to kill the child. He looked around and caught Ye Sung's eyes. Beside her was the jail warden. He came with Ye Sung. It was sweet of the guy. He took the liberty of taking care of Ye Sung, knowing that it will be hard for Yong Gu, living in jail and all.
Then the time came, and Yong Gu had to say something. Hesitating, he eventually said...yes. Yes, he intended to kill the child and rape her.
*grabs another tissue and cries and cries and cries*
This is when Shin Hye comes in, as if she was visiting the past to stand in the lawyer's place for the sake of her dad. She explained to the crowd, to the juries, to the judge, that he was NOT the guilty person. He was innocent. He was just Yong Gu, her innocent, lovable daddy, Yong Gu...
All his inmates were there. In the present trial, holding in their sobs and tears as they listen to Ye Sung -Shin Hye in this case-. Even the warden was there. But now, he came as Ye Sung's godfather, her guardian...
*grabs for another tissue box and criiiiieeeesssssss*
So Yong Gu was sentenced to death.
He accepted with his heart. He didn't want Ye Sung to suffer like the head of police said if he was called innocent. His inmates, when they found out about his sentence, they pitied him for the fate that he had...they were even devastated to know that by then, no one would be there for Ye Sung, the sweet little child.
So they tried their best to make him happy till the day of his sentence. Even Ye Sung tried her best. She got into her school's choir group that was to perform at the jail a few weeks later to cheer her dad up.
Meanwhile, Yong Gu's inmates had something in plan for him and Ye Sung. The gangster dude was the head of this plan, of course, with the help of his followers and all. They were planning on making a hot air balloon.
Yes...a hot air balloon for Yong Gu and Ye Sung to escape. It was very kind of them, even if you say they were just criminals, they are just as human as we are, if you asked me.
Right after the choir started, the plan started. And as it was ending, the choir members walked down as they sang, inviting them all to join in holding hands, walk out of the room to the field and find the hot air balloon waiting patiently outside for them.
Quickly but happily, they loaded Yong Gu and Ye Sung into the basket of the air balloon and set them off, letting go of the long rope. And they went off. Only by then, the guards notice it. They tried to stop the balloon, but Yong Gu's inmates were stopping them with all their might -pretending to ask them to dance together and stuff. Funny-.
Luck was on their side...or so we think... *starts to cry again*
The long rope from earlier, that held onto the balloon,-THAT DAMNED ROPE- got caught on the wires above the fence... Apparently, it didn't bother Ye Sung and Yong Gu at all. They were as calm as the sky that evening. They got to see the beautiful sunset from inside of the basket and this was where they had a monologue moment with each other.
Yong Gu: "Ye Sung ah, don't forget this day. And don't forget this daddy of yours too, okay?"
Ye Sung: "Yes daddy, I won't. I won't forget it"
It was beautiful. It was so beautiful that it makes everything better somehow... Poor Yong Gu... *soooobbbssss*
Ahhhhhhhh....And Yong Gu's day of sentence finally came round. We'll never know what did he get, an electric chair, or hanged to death...or poison? It was never told, thank God. Or not I would definitely flip.
That day, that morning, Yong Gu and Ye Sung had breakfast happily with their inmates. They were all dumbfounded by everything, but they were a bit happy to see those 2 eating well and smiling, even if they were tearing up.
As they finish breakfast, Ye Sung got up and bowed formally to her daddy, saying "Thank you for being my dad, daddy!"...and everyone laughed quietly, teary-eyed and all. Then the gangster dude grabbed a marker and scribbled on the back of Yong Gu's jail suit. And so did the others...
It was somehow a beautiful moment for all of them.
And off Yong Gu went. All the other people came to their cell's windows to wave Yong Gu off and they were all sad for him. Even the guards.
At the end of hall, the warden was waiting for them. He was there to take Ye Sung home after it all ended. *sobs-sniffs-sobs*
When Ye Sung was out of the hall and to the other side of the bars, she and Yong Gu said their goodbyes. Ye Sung was really tough that time, trying not to cry so her daddy won't cry too... and as he walks down the hall, his pace got slower and slower...realising how much he was devastated by all of this things that are happening to him...
His knees failed him and he collapsed. He cried and cried as he called for Ye Sung. Ye Sung heard and she cried for him, putting her hand through the bars, calling for her daddy...
*sobs all the way-wails and sniffs and cries*
And off Yong Gu went.
xx
The present time came back on and they was the grown-up Ye Sung, finally getting her daddy's name to be innocent.
She was happy...even when he wasn't there. She was happy.
As she got out to go home, it was snowing beautifully...caressing her broken yet content soul. She looked up...and apparently saw a hot air balloon with her daddy in it. And there she was, too.
The little her, Ye Sung from years ago...
Ye Sung: "Daddy? Daddy is that you?"
Yong Gu: "Ye Sung ah! Don't forget to eat your beans so you can grow! Ye Sung ah, goodbye! Goodbye Ye Sung ah!!!"
Yong Gu: "Goodbye, daddy. I love you..."
*cries till the end of time*
